Some of us were born destined for heaven

When I was a child, I believed
some crawled there in the gravel, falling
God planted me in the deepest ocean
over a threshold
then sat with me
at the ushers’ feet
before my new bones were grown
I took a long walk
I wasn’t afraid
as a child
I believed
in the alleys of a bombed-out hood
before I was born
I was married to the sky
before he even made the earth
and the clouds of imaginary heaven
he imagined me.
